A group of about 20 recruits pose with shovels alongside a completed trench, the walls of which are lined with sandbags. The track of the Awapuni Racecourse is visible in the background. This was home to one of New Zealand’s largest training camps in World War One, and was the sole location for training the New Zealand Medical Corps staff.
