A group of about fifteen soldiers holding picks and planks of wood are shown practising digging trenches. It was probably taken at the Awapuni Racecourse, which was home to one of New Zealand’s largest training camps in World War One, and was the sole location for training the New Zealand Medical Corps. staff.
