Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. On July 24 1988, the Mangaone and Kawau Streams flooded a large area in Palmerston North, triggering a civil defence emergency which was to last for four days. More than one thousand evacuees spent a night at the Convention Centre. The Palmerston North City Council commissioned a Comprehensive Stormwater Plan in the aftermath, as it recognised that learning from past flood events is critical to ensuring we are ready to face the next one.
