Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. The Ruahine Reserve was the site of Ruahine Kāinga (village) before 1864, a community of 150 to 200 people. It is recalled by Rangitāne as being where the old College of Education netball courts were later established. The site holds special historic significance for Rangitāne. It is also a memorial site for students and staff of Palmerston North Teachers' College who have passed away.
On 8 May 2024, the new reserve was unveiled, with landscaping to signify the historical connection between the Hokowhitu Lagoon and the Manawatū River.
