The Snellgrove brothers were well-known residents of the Rangitikei district. Jess Snellgrove (left) was killed in a bush-felling accident. Henry Edward Snellgrove (right) was born in 1853 and died in August 1924. He was a contractor in the Rangitikei district and he and brother-in-law assembled traction engines at Scotts Ferry. He drove the first traction engine in Otaki and Wanganui. In about 1912 he ran a small sawmill at Makowhai and cut a patch of white pine
