First Survey Centenary Plaque

Description

This plaque on the former Union Bank of Australia building, on the corner of The Square and Coleman Place, commemorates the survey of Palmerston North that began in February 1866 by chief district surveyor John Tiffin Stewart and his crew. The plaque was installed in 1971 as part of the Palmerston North Centennial Association's efforts during the city's centennial celebrations over 1970 and 1971 (as indicated by the emblem imprinted on the top left).
