Tiritea School changed its name to Turitea School in 2017. This followed the earlier official name change for the Turitea stream. The correct spelling of the stream's name is Turitea (turi = water, tea = bright or clear). However, during the 1880s the Palmerston North Borough Council misspelled the name and the incorrect version (Tititea) passed into common useage. In 1991, after the matter of correct spelling was raised by Rangitāne, the PNCC requested that the correct spelling be restored by the New Zealand Geographic Board.
