The Crusaders were Christian based groups of pupils who meet together at school. The basic concept was of student-led groups, who emphasised knowing and understanding the Bible, individual and group prayer, and Christian discipleship. Co-educational secondary schooling began in Palmerston North in 1902. In 1920 the Girls High School opened in Fitzherbert Avenue as a single sex school.
