Manawatū Gorge

Description

A road through the Gorge, linking Manawatu with Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay, was constructed 1871-1872, as seen on the left bank. This photograph looking towards Ashhurst was taken before the construction of the railway on the opposite bank in 1891.
