Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. In 1925, it was announced that two of the country's smallest rugby unions, Manawatū and Horowhenua, would merge for the purposes of forming a rep team. For eight years, the combined unions team played against larger provincial teams. A highlight for the Manawhenua team was when it briefly held the Ranfurly Shield in 1927. Results after 1927 were poor and at the AGM in 1933, the Horowhenua delegates moved that the new union be abolished.
