The Whakarongo Smithy on display during the Palmerston North Centenary parade. The The Manawatu Evening Standard on 15th March 1971 reported that the Whakarongo Smithy was "one of the most authentic and popular floats in the procession. It depicts a blacksmith's forge at the turn of the century." The float included forge, bellows, horse tack and wagon wheels, and two blacksmiths dressed in clothes from the previous century. The truck is parked in the Showgrounds. Based upon another photo of this float reproduced in Vera McLennan's From Stoney Creek to Whakarongo (1978), the two men are believed to be 'Doc' Romley (left) and Noel Groube, (right).
