The river well under construction
More Info →- Description
-
Palmerston North experienced a period of severe water shortage in the summer of 1943-1944, when the level of the lake a Turitea fell 3.5m below the bywash of the dam. The PNCC had to hastily sink a soak well on the south bank of the Manawatū River, near the Fitzherbert Bridge. This well had a useful capacity of 4,500 cubic metres (1,000,000 gallons) per day, but the only way of getting the required pressure from the river was by pumping.
