Group photo of young women outside St Andrew’s Church, Palmerston North. Seated, centre, is Jessie Moore Chapman, eldest daughter of local sheep and dairy farmer William Chapman. Jessie and her elder brother John were among the initial intake of pupils of Palmerston North High School on its opening in 1902, both being appointed Dux that year. Jessie went on to become a teacher, joining the staff at Terrace End School in 1909 on successful completion of a 2-year training course at Victoria College in Wellington. Aside from a year spent in London as part of a teachers’ exchange scheme in 1922/23 she remained at Terrace End for the remainder of her teaching career.
