Opiki Toll Bridge

Description

The old Opiki toll bridge photographed from the west bank looking eastward towards Palmerston North. It runs across the Manawatu River at Opiki and was constructed by the Tane Hemp Company in 1917-1918 (engineer Joseph Dawson, Pahiatua). It was known for many years as the Opiki Toll Bridge or the Opiki Suspension Bridge. It closed in 1969 but can still be seen today (2014).
