William Henry Smith

W H Smith (1854-1929) was born in Kettering, Shropshire, England. In 1877 he married Sarah Navara. They had two sons (H K G Smith who was killed at Passchendaele, and G Smith who died in an epidemic in NZ) and four daughters. After arriving in New Zealand, W H Smith worked on the 'Wairarapa Mercury', founded the 'Wairarapa News' in Masterton with Mr O’Meara, and was editor of the 'Manawatu Times'.
