Four male pupils from Aokautere School wear body-painted designs inspired by Aboriginal Australian culture as part of a teaching unit. One of them pretends to play a didgeridoo. This photo is of historical interest as it reflects the manner in which schools were increasingly teaching their students about non-European cultures, but did not always do so in a respectful, cultural sensitive manner. Aokautere School (formerly known as Fitzherbert East School) was established in 1889.
