In the centre can be seen the Ballance Bridge,over the Manawatu River, opened in 1904 and since replaced. On the right of the road leading into the Gorge is the Palmerston North to Napier railway line that opened in 1891. The tunnels seen were daylighted (removed) in 2008 to allow for larger freight cars.
