"Last Friday night's cool temperatures did little to halt a heatwave at the Albert as Midge Marsden and the Giant Killers took to the stage for the first of their Palmerston North shows.
The lively eight-piece band led an enthusiastic audience through a roller coaster ride of R 'n' B, rock and roll, soul, blues and even a taste of reggae with the Tosh-Jagger hit Don't look back. A pot-pourri of classic sounds from the likes of Al Green, The fabulous Thunderbirds, Little Richard, Lazy Lester and Stevie Ray Vaughan mixed with Marsden's style and charisma led to a crammed dance floor and a good time for all.
The large band, though somewhat smaller than what Aucklanders have been treated to, featured the talents of When the Cat's Away vocalist Dianne Swann, Gary Verbene on guitar, Wayne Bell on drums, Ross McDermott on bass, a three-piece bass section and Marsden taking up lead vocals, guitar and harmonica.
The band sped through fast-moving sets with professional ease while thoroughly enjoying themselves -- as we all were. Not for one moment was the performance lacking in the vitality we've come to expect from a Midge Marsden show. Ten months in the Dallas - New Orleans music scene has left Marsden no less the entertainer New Zealanders know him for.
